Abstract

This study aimed to analyze how Artificial Intelligence (AI) acts as a transformative agent in contemporary education, highlighting its contributions, challenges, and impacts on teaching and learning processes. This is an integrative literature review with a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive approach, conducted between March and April 2026. The search was carried out in the Scopus, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and IEEE Xplore databases using descriptors related to artificial intelligence, education, generative AI, personalized learning, and educational technologies. After applying the eligibility criteria, 18 studies were included in the final sample. The findings revealed that AI promotes personalized learning, enhances student autonomy, supports active methodologies, and contributes to the adaptation of educational content and assessments according to students’ individual needs. Furthermore, generative AI tools were shown to strengthen the production of teaching materials and pedagogical support. However, challenges related to ethics, data privacy, digital inequalities, and teacher training were also identified. It is concluded that Artificial Intelligence has significant potential to transform contemporary education, provided that its implementation occurs in an ethical, inclusive manner and remains associated with human mediation and the development of critical thinking.
