Abstract

This chapter aims to analyze the influence of social networks and digital culture on contemporary psychological distress, focusing on phenomena such as anxiety, depression, loneliness, and digital dependence. The study seeks to understand how virtual environments—marked by hyperconnectivity, constant exposure, and social comparison—affect the construction of subjectivity and emotional well-being. The methodology is based on a qualitative literature review encompassing recent studies in psychology, sociology, and communication. Academic articles, institutional reports, and theoretical works discussing the relationship between technology, behavior, and mental health were examined to identify common patterns and interpretations. The results indicate that the intensive use of social media can intensify feelings of inadequacy, isolation, and performance pressure, especially among young and adult users. Furthermore, the algorithmic logic of digital platforms tends to reinforce cycles of comparison and social validation, contributing to the increase of psychological symptoms related to stress and self-image. It is concluded that contemporary psychological distress is intrinsically connected to digital culture, demanding new forms of care, regulation, and media education. Critical reflection on social media use and the strengthening of real-life connections emerge as fundamental paths toward promoting mental health in a digitally mediated world.
