Abstract

This paper addresses the complexity and urgency of intervening in cognitive impairment affecting older adults after acquired brain injuries, such as strokes or head injuries. This has become a multidisciplinary challenge. Rather than accepting cognitive decline as an inevitable fate, the focus is on active strategies to mitigate and, in some cases, reverse functional losses. Intervention is based on the principle of neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to reorganize itself and form new connections. Mitigation strategies include multifaceted approaches, such as cognitive rehabilitation, which uses memory, attention, and reasoning exercises to strengthen existing neural networks and create pathways. Furthermore, occupational therapies and psychomotor stimulation are crucial, as they help integrate cognitive functions with activities of daily living, promoting greater autonomy and quality of life. Family support and a social environment are also important pillars, offering a context of safety and stimulation that enhances therapeutic gains. Early and continued intervention is essential to maximize recovery potential and prevent the progression of impairment. The central point of the summary is to emphasize that, through therapeutic strategies and a supportive environment, it is possible to rebuild neural and functional bridges, offering a prospect of hope and recovery for affected older adults.
