Burnout Syndrome, also known as professional burnout, is a psychological condition resulting from prolonged exposure to stressors in the workplace, especially affecting professionals who deal directly with the public, such as those in the health and education sectors. This study aims to understand the causes, consequences and coping strategies of the syndrome, highlighting its prevalence and impact on workers' quality of life. The research was carried out by means of a bibliographical review, using authors such as Freudenberger, Maslach, Dejours and Benevides-Pereira, among others, as well as official documents and data that show the advance of psychological illness in the workplace. The results show that burnout is strongly associated with exhausting working hours, excessive demands, precarious working relationships and a lack of institutional support. A growing medicalization of symptoms was also observed, which often masks the organizational roots of the problem. The analysis revealed that public policies aimed at workers' mental health are still incipient and that there is an urgent need to invest in preventive measures, such as promoting healthy working environments, professional development and psychological support programs. The conclusion is that combating burnout requires a multidisciplinary approach, ranging from changes in work organization to the reformulation of social and labour policies, with a view to preserving workers' psychological health and dignity.
