This study analyzes the theoretical and historical foundations of childhood, highlighting the contributions of cognitive and socio-interactionist development within the educational context. Based on a qualitative, bibliographical, and documentary research approach, it examines the historical evolution of the concept of childhood—from the medieval perception of the child as a "miniature adult" to its consolidation as a subject of rights in modernity, supported by the perspectives of Ariès, Comenius, Rousseau, Montessori, and Freinet. The trajectory of Jean Piaget’s genetic epistemology is explored, emphasizing the construction of knowledge through assimilation, accommodation, and equilibration processes across stages of development. In a complementary view, Vygotsky’s principles regarding social interactions, language, the Zone of Proximal Development, and pedagogical mediation through play are addressed. Finally, the study contextualizes childhood under the 1988 Brazilian Federal Constitution and the Statute of the Child and Adolescent, highlighting the challenges in implementing public policies that transcend welfare-oriented practices to guarantee holistic development across cognitive, social, and affective dimensions in Early Childhood Education.
