FROM ORALITY TO WRITING: REFLECTIONS ON THE LITERACY PROCESS

Abstract

This article discusses the literacy process as a transition from orality to writing, emphasizing the importance of understanding literacy not only as the technical mastery of the alphabetic code but also as a social and cultural practice. Orality is presented as the fundamental basis of learning, as it enables students to develop phonological awareness, creativity, and critical thinking. Writing, in turn, is analyzed as a social practice that broadens horizons, enables civic participation, and promotes intellectual emancipation. The text also addresses the challenges faced by schools, such as social inequalities, undervaluation of orality, and the need for continuous teacher training, while pointing out perspectives that include innovative methodologies and the use of digital technologies. It concludes that literacy should be understood as an inclusive and continuous process, capable of articulating orality and writing to form critical and participatory individuals.
