BETWEEN THE BUFFALO AND THE VOICE: DEPALATALIZATION IN MARAJOARA SPEECH THROUGH THE LENS OF ALIB

The work in question is a record of the phenomenon of depalatalization found in the speech of individuals living in the municipality of Ponta de Pedras, belonging to Marajó Island, in the state of Pará. From this perspective, the present study is based on the domain of three areas of language science - dialectology, sociolinguistics, phonetics, and phonology. From this, the objective was to carry out the phonetic-phonological description and analysis of the depalatalization found in the data obtained. For this, the theoretical studies of Bagno (2001; 2007; 1999), Ferreira and Cardoso (1994), Calvet (2002), Bortoni-Ricardo (2004), Labov (1983), Tarallo (1988), and Razky (1998) were used as a theoretical reference. From the methodological point of view, it is a descriptive study in which the sample is composed by the stratification of 16 collaborators selected based on the criteria: sex, natives of the locality, aged above 50 years old, and incomplete education. From this perspective, the data for the constitution of the corpus of the analysis were obtained through a phonetic-phonological questionnaire (AGUILERA et al., 2001), whose responses were phonetically transcribed and qualitatively analyzed. The results found point to 88 occurrences for the phenomenon of depalatalization in the sample, more specifically, in the items: "abelha" > "abeja"; "joelho" > "joeju," among others. The analysis highlights the variational character and the identity markers of the collaborators from Ponta de Pedras/PA.
