Abstract

This chapter aims to analyze the physiological manifestations that precede death, commonly referred to as “the last sound of life,” exploring their clinical and human meanings within the context of palliative care. The methodology consists of an integrative literature review, covering national and international studies published between 2010 and 2024, including authors such as Cicely Saunders, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, and Eric Cassell. The results indicate that signs such as the terminal sigh, Cheyne-Stokes respiration, and neurological and metabolic changes represent not only organic processes of bodily failure but also transitional moments perceived by relatives and healthcare professionals as expressions of finitude and dignity. The analysis shows that understanding these phenomena supports clinical decision-making, symptom management, and the humanization of end- of-life care. It is concluded that recognizing the last sound of life as part of the dying process contributes to a scientifically grounded, ethical, and empathetic approach, fostering emotional support and relief of suffering.
