Breastfeeding is widely recognized as the most complete and safe form of infant nutrition, essential for the child’s physical and emotional development and for the mother’s health. This study aimed to analyze breastfeeding practices, identify the main myths that interfere with its adherence, and discuss public policies that promote and support this practice. The methodology consisted of an integrative literature review conducted between June and August 2025, based on scientific articles published in the last ten years in the SciELO, LILACS, and PubMed databases. Studies addressing cultural aspects, popular beliefs, and governmental strategies related to breastfeeding were included. The results showed that although most mothers are aware of the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding until six months of age, there are still significant barriers such as misconceptions about the quality of breast milk, lack of family support, and difficulties upon returning to work. Among the most common myths are the belief in “weak milk” and the supposed need for early food supplementation. Public policies, such as the Amamenta e Alimenta Brasil Strategy and the extension of maternity leave, proved effective in promoting and maintaining breastfeeding. It is concluded that the success of breastfeeding depends on continuous educational actions, the fight against misinformation, and the strengthening of incentive policies, with the active involvement of health professionals, families, and society as a whole.
