Abstract

This systematic literature review aims to analyze the relationship between sleep and mental health, highlighting the main scientific findings of the last ten years (2014–2024) regarding the impacts of sleep quality and duration on psychological and emotional well-being. Sleep is an essential biological process for the regulation of cognitive, hormonal and immunological functions, and is considered one of the fundamental pillars of human health. Contemporary scientific literature shows that sleep disorders, such as insomnia, apnea and prolonged deprivation, are strongly associated with the development of mental disorders, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and cognitive impairment. Articles indexed in Scielo, PubMed, PsycINFO and Google Scholar were analyzed, selected based on inclusion criteria that included empirical research and theoretical reviews focusing on the interaction between sleep and mental health in adult and adolescent populations. The results indicated that poor sleep quality has a direct influence on emotional regulation, memory and neuroendocrine functioning, favoring the emergence of psychological distress. Furthermore, a bidirectional relationship was evidenced, in which mental disorders also negatively impact sleep patterns, creating a feedback loop that is harmful to the individual's overall health. It is concluded that multidisciplinary interventions aimed at sleep hygiene and mental health education are fundamental for promoting biopsychological balance and preventing emotional disorders, consolidating sleep as an essential determinant of quality of life and cognitive functioning.
