Abstract

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, and tenderness in specific areas of the body. The condition affects approximately 2–4% of the world's population, with a predominance in women. Fibromyalgia can have a significant impact on the quality of life of affected individuals, affecting their ability to perform daily activities, work, and participate in social activities. The etiology of fibromyalgia is not yet fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Studies have shown that individuals with fibromyalgia have changes in the way the brain processes pain, resulting in increased sensitivity to pain. In addition, factors such as stress, physical or emotional trauma, and infections can trigger or aggravate the symptoms of fibromyalgia. The diagnosis of fibromyalgia is based primarily on the symptoms reported by the patient and a physical examination. There are no specific laboratory or imaging tests to diagnose fibromyalgia, which can make diagnosis difficult. Diagnostic criteria include widespread pain for at least three months, along with tenderness at specific points on the body. The treatment of fibromyalgia is multimodal and aims to relieve symptoms and improve the patient's quality of life. Treatment options include pain relief medications such as analgesics, antidepressants, and muscle relaxants. In addition, non-pharmacological therapies such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, exercise, acupuncture, and psychotherapy can be beneficial in the treatment of fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that can have a significant impact on the lives of affected individuals. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential to relieve symptoms and improve the quality of life of patients with fibromyalgia. Continued research on fibromyalgia is critical to improving our understanding of the condition and developing new treatment strategies.
