Providing educational support to neurodivergent students poses a significant challenge for educational institutions, particularly given the need for pedagogical practices that acknowledge diverse forms of learning, participation, and development. In this context, teacher professional development emerges as a fundamental element for enhancing teaching practice and fostering more inclusive educational processes. This study aimed to analyze the importance of teacher professional development regarding the educational support of neurodivergent students, identifying training needs, pedagogical strategies, and opportunities to improve educational practice. It is a qualitative, exploratory literature review based on the analysis of 14 scientific articles published between 2020 and 2026—sourced from databases such as Google Scholar and SciELO—selected based on thematic relevance, publication date, and availability in Portuguese. Data were examined through thematic analysis, considering aspects related to continuing education, pedagogical practices, educational resources, planning, assessment, and collaboration between professionals and families. The results indicated that teacher professional development is linked to expanding the knowledge required to recognize students' unique characteristics and to organize more flexible, accessible pedagogical strategies. Contributions regarding the use of assistive technologies, curricular adaptation, diversified assessment methods, and collaborative work were also identified. It was found that initial teacher training, while important, needs to be complemented by continuous professional development processes aligned with the concrete realities of school practice. The study concludes that teacher professional development is an essential component for strengthening inclusive practices and expanding opportunities for the participation and learning of neurodivergent students. This research contributes to understanding teachers' training needs and to planning institutional initiatives aimed at enhancing inclusive education.
