BIOMES IN DEBATE: A GAMIFIED PROPOSAL FOR WORKING ON ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION IN AN EDUCATIONAL CONTEXT

The educational material “The Biomes on Trial” is a game created by undergraduate students from the Biological Sciences Teaching Degree Program during the Ecology I course. The material aimed to discuss existing environmental problems in each Brazilian biome in a way that encompasses concepts of ecology and conservation biology in a respectful and critical manner in the classroom. For the creation of the material, studies were carried out in order to identify the main environmental problems reported in each biome. Based on the collection of information, explanatory cards were created so that the players could learn about the problem. In addition, characters were created, which will be drawn according to the way the teacher prefers to divide the class. Based on the problem and the division of the characters, the students should present their points of view and engage in dialogue consciously and while respecting their classmates’ opinions. Finally, although the educational material does not replace other teaching methods, gamification can be an important tool in students’ education, since it encourages autonomy and peer learning.
