Abstract

According to Peter Burke (1989), studying festivals is all about studying rituals. Cplay essential social functions within society. The peak of a festival occurs when its rituals are put into practice. Citing Victor Turner, Burke (1989) states that festive laughter provides an experience of ecstasy. From this perspective, we take as our main reference the Russian thinker Mikhail Bakhtin, particularly in his account of the history of laughter in the popular comic culture of the Middle Ages and of the comic moment as the high point of Amazonian festivals.
