SKIN MICROBIOTA AND ITS INFLUENCE ON AESTHETIC TREATMENTS

The skin microbiota, composed of commensal bacteria, fungi, and viruses, plays a fundamental role in maintaining skin homeostasis and in the response to aesthetic procedures. This chapter aimed to analyze the influence of the skin microbiota on the effectiveness and safety of aesthetic treatments, considering its relationship with skin barrier integrity and inflammatory processes. The methodology was based on a narrative review of scientific literature, analyzing studies by Grice and Segre, Byrd, Sanford, Belkaid, and other researchers who investigate the skin microbial ecology. The results show that a balanced microbiota is associated with improved wound healing, reduced risk of infection, and greater tolerance to aesthetic procedures such as chemical peels, microneedling, and laser therapy. Disruption of this ecosystem, known as dysbiosis, may increase inflammation, skin sensitivity, and post-treatment complications. It is concluded that preserving and modulating the skin microbiota should be considered an essential strategy in modern aesthetic protocols, contributing to safer, more effective, and longer-lasting outcomes.
