Orthopedic trauma is one of the leading causes of morbidity, functional disability, and healthcare costs worldwide. Complications associated with this type of trauma can occur early or late, involving the musculoskeletal, vascular, neurological, infectious, and metabolic systems. Early recognition of these complications is essential to reduce permanent sequelae, mortality, and length of hospital stay. This article aims to comprehensively review the main complications of orthopedic trauma, addressing their pathophysiological mechanisms, clinical manifestations, diagnostic methods, and prevention and management strategies.
