Abstract

This chapter presents a critical reflection on Popular Education as a pedagogical and political proposal aimed at the emancipation of individuals and social transformation. Far from being restricted to the classroom or the mere transmission of content, Popular Education articulates knowledge produced in everyday life, in common sense, in popular traditions, and in science, valuing dialogue as a formative principle.

Starting from its historical roots in Brazil — highlighting experiences such as the Popular Culture Movement, the Basic Education Movement, and the 40 Hours of Angicos — the text highlights the role of Popular Education as an instrument of resistance to historical inequalities and exclusions. The popular educator is presented as a critical and ethical mediator, capable of fostering the political awareness of the learners and acting as an agent of transformation.

In addition, community projects are analyzed as privileged spaces for the circulation of knowledge and formative practices, emphasizing their relevance in the face of contemporary social challenges. Finally, the analysis of the film How Much Is It Worth or Is It Per Kilo? It allows us to problematize the differences between welfare and emancipation, reinforcing the relevance of Popular Education as a practice of freedom and social justice.
