Cognition encompasses the mental processes that allow us to acquire, process, and use information, and is essential for the autonomy of older adults. As the population ages, cognitive assessment becomes a fundamental tool for screening for potential declines. Several instruments are used for this purpose, with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) being one of the best-known and most widely used. It assesses various areas, such as orientation, attention, calculation, language, and memory. Another frequently used screening instrument is the Clock Drawing Test, which, in its simplicity, can identify changes in executive functions and visuospatial ability. In addition, the MOCA (Montreal Cognitive Assessment) stands out for its greater sensitivity in detecting mild cognitive impairments. Early screening is crucial, as the most prevalent neurodegenerative disease in the population over 60 is Alzheimer's disease, a condition that causes progressive and irreversible cognitive decline. Early detection enables the implementation of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions that can slow the progression of symptoms, improving the quality of life of the patient and their family.
