IMPACTS OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON THE MENTAL HEALTH OF NURSES IN BRAZIL – A NARRATIVE REVIEW

This study aimed to investigate, through a narrative literature review, the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of nursing professionals in Brazil. Based on the analysis of scientific articles available in the PubMed, Scielo, and Google Scholar databases, a significant prevalence of symptoms such as anxiety, depression, stress, and Burnout Syndrome was identified among these professionals, especially among young women working in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). The main causes cited were work overload, shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), social isolation, lack of institutional psychological support, and insecurity regarding the risk of infection. The results highlight the urgent need for public policies and institutional actions aimed at providing psychological care for nursing professionals, both in times of crisis and under regular conditions. It is concluded that ensuring emotional support and adequate working conditions is essential to preserving the mental health of these workers and maintaining the quality of care provided to the population.
