Abstract

School transformations increase the demands placed on teachers and call for an examination of the knowledge that supports pedagogical decisions committed to learning. This chapter discusses the teaching knowledge and skills required in this context, considering the relationships among pedagogical mediation, digital culture, professional development and working conditions. It presents a qualitative bibliographic study with a theoretical and reflective approach, based on a purposively selected set of texts concerning teaching work, teacher education, authorship and learning. Interpretive reading organizes the discussion into four areas: the construction of professional knowledge; mediation and the monitoring of learning; critical engagement with technologies; and collaboration and institutional support for teaching. The analysis suggests that the relevance of a teaching skill depends on its connection with educational purposes and the concrete conditions in which teachers work. Mastering tools alone does not provide a sufficient criterion for assessing pedagogical quality. A synthesis table presents implications for planning and school organization as an analytical proposal rather than an empirically validated framework. The chapter concludes that a commitment to learning requires teachers who can interpret situations, justify decisions and revise interventions, within institutions that provide time for study, collaboration and appropriate resources.
