PALLIATIVE CARE FOR PEOPLE WITH ADVANCED CHRONIC DISEASES: STRATEGIES FOR SYMPTOM CONTROL AND PROMOTING QUALITY OF LIFE

Palliative care for people with advanced chronic diseases constitutes a healthcare approach aimed at preventing and relieving suffering, controlling symptoms, and promoting quality of life in the face of conditions that progressively compromise functionality and well-being. This study is characterized as a qualitative and descriptive literature review and aims to analyze strategies used in palliative care for the management of physical, psychological, social, and spiritual symptoms in people with advanced chronic diseases. The methodology was based on the analysis of scientific literature addressing palliative care, symptom management, multidisciplinary care, and quality of life. The results highlighted the importance of systematic and individualized assessment of symptoms such as pain, dyspnea, fatigue, nausea, anxiety, and sleep disturbances, combined with effective communication, shared care planning, and support for family members and caregivers. The findings also demonstrated that integrated multidisciplinary teamwork favors more comprehensive care centered on the needs and preferences of the person receiving care. It is concluded that the early integration of palliative care into the management of advanced chronic diseases contributes to the relief of suffering, preservation of dignity, and promotion of quality of life.
