THE ROLE OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES AND THE PRESERVATION OF NATURAL RESOURCES

The increasing intensification of environmental problems has highlighted the need for strategies capable of promoting public awareness and encouraging sustainable practices. In this context, environmental education stands out as a fundamental tool for developing conscious, critical, and environmentally responsible citizens committed to the preservation of natural resources. This study aimed to analyze the role of environmental education in the development of sustainable practices and the preservation of natural resources. To achieve this objective, an integrative literature review was conducted using studies retrieved from the SciELO, Latindex, ERIC, and OJS repository databases. Articles published between 2016 and 2026 in Portuguese and English that addressed the relationship between environmental education, sustainability, and environmental conservation were included. The analysis of the 19 selected studies revealed that environmental education significantly contributes to the development of ecological awareness, citizenship education, and environmentally responsible behaviors. The findings also demonstrated that participatory methodologies, practical activities, and interdisciplinary approaches enhance meaningful learning and strengthen commitment to sustainability. Furthermore, the studies showed that valuing local knowledge and contextualizing educational actions increase the effectiveness of environmental practices. It was concluded that environmental education plays an essential role in promoting sustainability and preserving natural resources, constituting an important strategy for addressing contemporary socio-environmental challenges.
