SLEEP DEPRIVATION ASSOCIATED WITH EXCESSIVE USE OF ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND ITS CORRELATION WITH ANXIETY, DEPRESSIVE DISORDERS, AND EMOTIONAL DYSREGULATION

Sleep deprivation associated with excessive use of electronic devices has become an increasing public health concern, especially among adolescents and young adults, due to its effects on mental health and emotional balance. This study aimed to analyze the association between reduced sleep quality and duration resulting from prolonged use of electronic devices and its correlation with anxiety disorders, depressive symptoms, and emotional dysregulation. The methodology consisted of a narrative literature review based on scientific articles published in national and international databases, including studies related to mental health, neuroscience, and digital behavior. The results indicated that excessive screen exposure, particularly during nighttime, interferes with circadian rhythms and reduces melatonin secretion, impairing sleep architecture. Furthermore, a significant association was identified between sleep deprivation, increased anxiety symptoms, depressive manifestations, and greater vulnerability to emotional changes such as irritability, impulsivity, and difficulties in emotional regulation. It was concluded that excessive use of electronic devices represents a relevant factor contributing to sleep disturbances and mental health impairments, reinforcing the need for educational and preventive strategies aimed at promoting conscious and healthy use of digital technologies.
