The use of medicinal plants remains a relevant practice in healthcare, integrating traditional knowledge with contemporary scientific evidence. In this context, the present study aimed to analyze, in an integrated manner, the main aspects related to ethnobotany, pharmacological properties, and therapeutic applications of these species. This is a qualitative narrative review, developed through systematic searches in the PubMed, SciELO, and Google Scholar databases, using descriptors related to the topic in both Portuguese and English. The selected studies indicate that several medicinal plants contain bioactive compounds with significant therapeutic potential, particularly regarding anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities. Furthermore, scientific validation has contributed to strengthening phytotherapy as a complementary approach in healthcare. However, challenges related to standardization, safety, and rational use remain evident, especially considering the widespread use of these resources by the population. Thus, the integration of traditional knowledge with scientific research is essential to promote safer and more effective practices, as well as to expand opportunities for the development of plant-based drugs. It is concluded that, despite their promising potential, medicinal plants require continuous investigation and a multidisciplinary approach to ensure their proper use in healthcare contexts.
