Abstract

The development of atypical children involves significant challenges in cognitive, motor, social, and communicative aspects, requiring specialized, continuous, and individualized interventions. These children may present conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, and language development delays, requiring multidisciplinary follow-up throughout their growth process. In this context, this study aims to understand the importance of the speech- language pathologist's role within the support network in the therapeutic evolution of these children. This is a qualitative bibliographic review based on scientific literature in the fields of speech-language pathology, child   development,   and   interdisciplinary   practices. The results indicate that the role of the speech-language pathologist goes beyond traditional clinical care, encompassing not only the assessment and intervention of speech, language, hearing, and orofacial function disorders, but also guidance and support for families and caregivers. In addition, this professional plays an essential role in collaborating with other members of the interdisciplinary team, such as psychologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and educators, contributing to a comprehensive and child-centered approach. The presence of a structured support network promotes the continuity of stimulation in family and school environments, expanding opportunities for development and learning. It is concluded that the integrated performance of the speech-language pathologist within the support network enhances therapeutic gains, promoting significant advances in communication, social interaction, and the child’s autonomy. Thus, it directly contributes to social inclusion and to improving the quality of life of atypical children and their families, reinforcing the importance of interdisciplinary practices in child care.
