CARAPA GUIANENSIS (ANDIROBA): BIOACTIVE PROPERTIES, PHARMACOLOGICAL APPLICATIONS, AND THERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL

The use of medicinal plants is one of the oldest therapeutic practices, widely applied in healthcare. In this context, Amazon biodiversity stands out as an important source of bioactive compounds, including Carapa guianensis Aubl., commonly known as andiroba, traditionally used to treat inflammation, muscle pain, and skin disorders. This study aimed to analyze the bioactive properties and pharmacological applications of andiroba oil based on scientific literature. A qualitative literature review was conducted using Google Scholar, SciELO, and PubMed databases, including studies published between 2020 and 2026. Studies met the inclusion criteria. The findings indicate that the species has a chemical composition rich in secondary metabolites, such as limonoids, triterpenes, and fatty acids, mainly associated with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. Additionally, dermatological and cosmetic applications were identified due to its moisturizing and regenerative properties. It is concluded that Carapa guianensis presents significant therapeutic potential; however, further clinical studies are necessary to confirm its efficacy and safety.
