EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROFILE AND HOSPITAL IMPACT OF AIDS IN CURITIBA (PR) BETWEEN 2015 AND 2024

The primary objective of this study was to analyse the epidemiological profile, morbidity, hospital production and mortality associated with AIDS cases among residents of the municipality of Curitiba (PR) between 2015 and 2024. This is a descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective study with a quantitative approach, using data from DATASUS (SINAN, SIH, and SIM). The setting was the municipality of Curitiba, Paraná, with a time frame between 2015 and 2024. During the period under scrutiny, a total of 4,108 cases of AIDS were documented, with the detection rate standing at 25.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the year 2024. The majority of cases were observed in the male population (73.2%) and within the young adult demographic (53.9% of diagnoses occurred in the 20-39 age group). The hospital analysis revealed a prolonged average stay of 25 days and a significant financial impact, with the average cost per admission reaching R$ 3,502.47 in 2021 and remaining high in 2024 (R$ 2,706.85). A paradoxical scenario was identified in mortality: although the absolute number of deaths fell by 35.6% after 2021, reaching the lowest value in the series in 2024 (85 records), the hospital mortality rate doubled in the decade, reaching 15.25%. The majority of deaths (68.6%) occurred among males, and the figure was even higher (70.4%) among white people. It can be concluded that, despite the reduction in overall deaths, high in-hospital mortality and the complexity of hospitalisations highlight late diagnoses and failures in retention and medication adherence, making AIDS a sentinel event that requires the strengthening of the Health Care Network.
