GOLDEN AUGUST: PROMOTION OF BREASTFEEDING IN PRIMARY HEALTH CARE

Abstract

Golden August symbolizes the month dedicated to promoting and encouraging breastfeeding, representing the “gold standard” of human milk quality and emphasizing its importance for maternal and child health. Objective: To describe the educational activities carried out during the Golden August campaign at the Nova Capital Primary Health Unit in Porto Nacional – TO, under the theme “Breastfeeding is a gift that nourishes the body and soul,” highlighting the relevance of breastfeeding as an act of love, bonding, and comprehensive care. Methodology: This is a descriptive experience report conducted by health students, based on a participatory health education methodology aimed at pregnant and postpartum women in the community. The activities took place in the morning and included discussion circles, practical demonstrations with didactic materials, and guidance on proper latch techniques, breastfeeding benefits, and management of common difficulties. Results and Discussion: Participants showed great interest, sharing experiences and clarifying doubts, which strengthened the support network between mothers and health professionals. The educational strategies proved effective in promoting women’s empowerment, expanding knowledge about breastfeeding, and reinforcing the role of Primary Health Care in promoting, protecting, and supporting breastfeeding. Final Considerations: It is concluded that educational initiatives such as this are essential to encourage healthy practices, strengthen the bond between mother and child, and consolidate breastfeeding as an act of love, care, and commitment to maternal and child health.
