Abstract

The irrational use of medicines is one of the major challenges faced by contemporary healthcare systems, particularly due to the high prevalence of self-medication, the easy access to pharmaceutical products, and the widespread dissemination of unreliable health information through digital platforms. This study aimed to analyze the importance of the pharmacist's role in promoting the rational use of medicines and ensuring patient safety in the context of contemporary self-medication practices. The methodology consisted of a narrative literature review based on scientific articles, national and international guidelines, and institutional publications addressing pharmaceutical care, patient safety, and rational medicine use. The findings demonstrated that the active participation of pharmacists significantly contributes to preventing medication-related problems, reducing adverse drug reactions, identifying drug interactions, improving therapeutic adherence, and strengthening health education initiatives. Furthermore, pharmaceutical interventions support informed decision-making by patients, encouraging the appropriate use of medicines and minimizing the risks associated with self-medication. It is concluded that pharmacists play a strategic role in health promotion, prevention of adverse events, and enhancement of patient safety. Therefore, strengthening pharmaceutical services and public policies focused on rational medicine use is essential for improving healthcare quality and patient outcomes.
