THE ROLE OF NURSING IN THE SURVEILLANCE AND CONTROL OF EMERGING DISEASES IN BRAZIL

Emerging diseases represent one of the main contemporary challenges for public health due to their potential for rapid spread, social impacts, and the need for integrated responses from health surveillance systems. In this context, nursing plays a strategic role in the early identification of health threats, epidemiological monitoring, health education, and implementation of prevention and control measures in Brazil. This chapter aims to analyze the role of nursing in the surveillance and control of emerging diseases in Brazil, highlighting its contributions to collective health protection. The methodology consists of a narrative literature review based on scientific publications, official documents from the Brazilian Ministry of Health, and studies addressing nursing practices in epidemiological surveillance and health emergencies. The results demonstrate that nursing professionals directly participate in case reporting, epidemiological investigation, vaccination campaigns, care for affected individuals, and educational actions within communities. It is concluded that nursing is an essential component for strengthening health surveillance, enabling rapid, humanized, and effective responses to the emergence and reemergence of diseases in Brazil.
