Abstract

Chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy represents the main clinical manifestation of Chagas disease and remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality in endemic regions. This study aimed to analyze the main complications, diagnostic methods, and therapeutic strategies related to chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy. This is an integrative literature review conducted in the SciELO, Latindex, and PubMed databases, complemented by open-access scientific literature, including publications in Portuguese and English from 2020 to 2026. Fifteen studies were selected, showing that disease progression is associated with inflammatory mechanisms, persistent parasitic infection, and myocardial remodeling, leading to heart failure, ventricular arrhythmias, thromboembolic events, and sudden cardiac death. The results demonstrated advances in diagnostic approaches, particularly in cardiac imaging and risk stratification, as well as progress in pharmacological and interventional therapies. It is concluded that early identification and appropriate clinical management are essential to reduce complications and improve patient prognosis.
