THE SIGNIFIER “CABRA DA PESTE” IN THE SUBJECTIVE CONSTITUTION OF THE NORTHEASTERN MAN

Abstract

This article examines the signifier cabra da peste as a symbolic element embedded in Northeastern Brazilian culture and discusses its effects on the subjective constitution of masculinity. Drawing on a dialogue between masculinity studies, psychoanalysis, and research on Northeastern cultural identity, the study seeks to understand how this popular expression contributes to the production of social representations of manhood in Northeast Brazil. Adopting a qualitative and interpretive approach, the research is based on a discursive analysis of literary, sociological, and cultural works that have shaped the regional imaginary. Particular attention is given to narratives that emphasize the figure of the resilient and courageous sertanejo (backlands inhabitant), frequently associated with the expression cabra da peste. The findings indicate that this signifier operates primarily as a symbolic marker of masculinity, condensing values such as bravery, resilience, and the capacity to confront adversity. It is concluded that expressions rooted in popular culture may function as symbolic devices in the production of subjectivity, influencing processes of identification and the social expectations directed toward Northeastern Brazilian men.
