PRIVATE NATURAL HERITAGE RESERVES (RPPNs) IN BRAZIL: AN INTEGRATED ANALYSIS OF THE ECOLOGICAL EFFECTIVENESS, LEGAL SUSTAINABILITY AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO CONSERVATION GOALS

Private Natural Heritage Reserves (RPPNs) represent an innovative model of voluntary environmental conservation in Brazil, integrating private properties into the National System of Conservation Units (SNUC). This article analyzes their historical development, legal framework and ecological contributions, highlighting their strategic role in protecting biodiversity. Through a documentary review and analysis of official data, it shows that RPPNs, regulated by Law No. 9.985/2000 (SNUC) and the Forest Code (Law No. 12.651/2012), already protect more than 1.8 million hectares, sheltering endangered species and forming essential ecological corridors. The study details tax incentives (such as exemption from ITR) and economic incentives for landowners, as well as discussing bureaucratic challenges and opportunities for expansion. The results reinforce that RPPNs are fundamental to achieving national and international conservation goals, combining ecological effectiveness with economic sustainability. The conclusion is that strengthening this category - through integrated public policies - can significantly increase the protection of critical biomes such as the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado.
