TREASURE IN JARS OF CLAY: SCRIPTURE, MODERNITY, AND SCIENCE

This article investigates the relationship between Scripture, modernity, and biblical scholarship, addressing the tension between the authority of Scripture and the modern demand for absolute literality and historicity. It is based on the hypothesis that understanding Scripture as an object of infallibility may produce what Hans-Jürgen Prien calls a “paper Pope,” replacing papal authority with an absolute textual authority. Methodologically, this study employs bibliographic research with a qualitative, historical-hermeneutical approach, through the analysis of theological and philosophical sources. The research reconstructs the context of the Enlightenment and its influence on biblical scholarship, examining the concept of the “paper Pope” and its relationship to sola Scriptura. The metaphor of “treasure in jars of clay” (2 Cor. 4:7) guides the understanding of Scripture’s human dimension as a testimony to Christ, arguing that biblical scholarship can serve the Church without threatening faith.
