CULTURAL TRANSLATION AND VISUALITY: CHALLENGES AND PRACTICES IN THE PRODUCTION OF LITERATURE FOR THE DEAF

Abstract

This article analyzes the intersection between cultural translation, visuality, and Deaf literature, investigating the challenges and practices in the production of literary materials aimed at the Deaf community. The main objective is to discuss how visuality acts as an epistemological and aesthetic matrix in the constitution of Deaf literature, overcoming mere literal translation from Portuguese. Methodologically, this is a qualitative bibliographical research, grounded in Deaf Studies, Translation Studies, and the cultural approach to language. The theoretical framework is anchored in authors such as Quadros, Karnopp, Strobel, and Perlin. The results indicate that literary production for the Deaf requires a reconfiguration of the concept of translation, in which the visual experience and the embodiment of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) transition from the status of support to textual protagonism, promoting the strengthening of identity and Deaf cultural heritage.
