SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY ASSESSMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF ORAL FUNCTIONS DURING BREASTFEEDING

Breastfeeding is fundamental for the development of the newborn, encompassing nutritional, immunological, and orofacial aspects. However, difficulties in sucking, swallowing, and breathing can compromise this process. Speech-language pathology intervention is essential in the evaluation of oral functions and in the early identification of alterations. This study, a literature review, discusses the importance of speech-language pathology management in breastfeeding, highlighting assessment tools and therapeutic strategies. The results show that early intervention contributes to the success of breastfeeding and to the proper development of the stomatognathic system, preventing future complications and promoting a better quality of life.
