RATIONAL USE OF ANTIBIOTICS IN PRIMARY HEALTH CARE: THE PHARMACIST'S ROLE IN CONSCIOUS DISPENSING

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents a major public health concern, particularly within the context of Primary Health Care (PHC), where most antimicrobial prescriptions are issued. This study aimed to examine the rational use of antibiotics in PHC, considering evidence-based prescribing, responsible dispensing practices, health education strategies, and the implementation of clinical protocols, with emphasis on the role of the pharmacist. This study consists of a narrative literature review with a qualitative approach, based on the collection of data from scientific articles, dissertations, and institutional documents related to PHC published between 2020 and 2025. The studies were retrieved from the following databases: PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, and Google Scholar. The findings revealed a high rate of inappropriate antibiotic prescriptions, particularly for infections of viral etiology, as well as weaknesses in the organization of Pharmaceutical Care services. The pharmacist’s clinical practice may contribute significantly to improving dispensing quality, promoting treatment adherence, and reducing the inappropriate use of antimicrobials. It is concluded that strengthening Pharmaceutical Care in PHC, combined with health education initiatives and the implementation of evidence-based protocols, is essential to ensure the rational use of antibiotics and to address antimicrobial resistance.
