Abstract

Breastfeeding is recognized as one of the main strategies for promoting child health, being essential for the proper growth and development of the newborn. In extremely premature infants, who present an immature immune system and greater vulnerability to complications, the administration of colostrum becomes even more relevant. This study aims to analyze the importance of breastfeeding for the newborn, with emphasis on the immunological benefits of colostrum in extremely premature infants, through a literature review. Scientific articles published in national and international databases were used. The results show that breast milk, especially colostrum, significantly reduces the risk of infections, necrotizing enterocolitis, neonatal sepsis, and mortality in extremely premature infants. It is concluded that encouraging breastfeeding and the early administration of colostrum should be a priority in neonatal care practices.
