Abstract

Technological revolutions are imposing a new paradigm on society and organizations. In this scenario, the Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as the great driving force behind these changes, but it presents a number of challenges, including conceptual, technological and social ones. The proliferation of intelligent objects with sensing, processing and communication capabilities has increased in recent years. In this context, the IoT connects these objects to the internet and promotes communication between users and devices in an automated and efficient manner. The electricity industry will also benefit from the IoT, modernizing the sector with Intelligent Electricity Networks (IENs). With IoT-enabled REIs, the promotion of energy efficiency for social and economic well-being will have great results, bringing technological advances together with sustainable requirements through the use of renewable energies. Therefore, the aim of this article is to provide a review of the IoT in the context of REIs, including applications, concepts and the challenges expected for consolidating its functionalities.
