CARNEIRO RIBEIRO EDUCATIONAL CENTER: ANÍSIO TEIXEIRA AND FULL-TIME PUBLIC EDUCATION

Abstract

This study analyzes the Carneiro Ribeiro Educational Center, known as Escola Parque, conceived by Anísio Teixeira and inaugurated in Salvador, Bahia, in 1950, as a pioneering experience of full-time public education in Brazil. It is a theoretical study with a qualitative approach, carried out through a bibliographic and documentary review based on writings by Anísio Teixeira himself, historiographical studies on the experience and legal documents. The general objective is to understand how Escola Parque embodied Teixeira's conception that education is a right of all and not a privilege of the few. The specific objectives are to present the educator's trajectory and the political context of the time, to describe the organization of the center, to identify the philosophical foundations that supported it and to discuss its influence on later full-time education policies. The results indicate that the model, by combining class schools and a park school, extended the school day and integrated instruction, work, art, physical education and social life, offering children from working-class backgrounds an education previously restricted to the elites. It was also found that the experience inspired the school system of Brasília, the Integrated Centers of Public Education and recent federal programs. It is concluded that Escola Parque remains a fundamental reference for thinking about a democratic public school, although the universalization of high-quality full-time education is still a challenge for the country.
