Abstract

Sepsis is a potentially severe clinical condition associated with a dysregulated host response to infection and may rapidly progress to organ dysfunction, shock, and death. This study is characterized as a qualitative and descriptive literature review and aims to analyze the main challenges related to early recognition, clinical management, and reduction of in-hospital mortality from sepsis. The methodology was based on the analysis of scientific publications and guidelines addressing the identification of clinical deterioration, assessment of organ dysfunction, infection treatment, hemodynamic support, and organization of hospital care. The results indicate that timely recognition remains challenging due to the variability of clinical manifestations and the potential for rapid disease progression. Systematic patient assessment, investigation of the infectious source, appropriate antimicrobial administration, infection source control, individualized fluid resuscitation, and the use of vasopressors when indicated are relevant components of management. Team training, appropriate use of protocols, and effective communication among healthcare professionals are also highlighted. It is concluded that reducing sepsis-associated mortality depends on combining early recognition, evidence-based clinical interventions, and efficient organization of healthcare processes.
