Abstract

Youth and Adult Education (EJA) plays a fundamental role in guaranteeing the right to education for individuals who did not complete their schooling at the standard age, requiring pedagogical practices capable of addressing the specific needs of this demographic. This study aimed to analyze the influence of teachers' pedagogical competencies on the performance and participation of students in Youth and Adult Education. It is an integrative literature review conducted using the Latindex, ERIC, and Diadorim databases, covering articles published between 2021 and 2026 in Portuguese and English. Study selection was guided by pre-established inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulting in the analysis of 16 scientific publications. The results demonstrated that competencies related to instructional planning, content mastery, the use of active methodologies, communication, continuing education, pedagogical leadership, and the integration of educational technologies positively influence students' academic performance, motivation, critical thinking, and participation. It was also found that inclusive, contextualized, and culturally responsive pedagogical practices strengthen the teacher-student bond, fostering school retention and meaningful learning within EJA. The study concludes that strengthening teachers' pedagogical competencies is a strategic element for improving the quality of education, contributing to educational environments that are more participatory, inclusive, and committed to the holistic development of students. Empirical studies focused specifically on the context of Youth and Adult Education are recommended to expand the body of evidence on this topic.
