Abstract

Schizophrenia is a severe psychiatric disorder characterized by alterations in thought, perception, affect, and behavior. In recent decades, the rising prevalence of cannabis use and the increased concentration of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in available preparations have raised concerns regarding their effects on mental health. Epidemiological, neurobiological, and clinical evidence demonstrates a consistent association between cannabis use—particularly during adolescence—and an increased risk of subsequently developing psychotic disorders, including schizophrenia. This risk appears to be dependent on dose, frequency of use, substance potency, and individual genetic vulnerability. Although cannabis is not considered the sole cause of schizophrenia, current data suggest it may act as a significant triggering or accelerating factor for the clinical onset of the disorder in predisposed individuals. This article reviews the key pathophysiological mechanisms, risk factors, and scientific evidence regarding the association between cannabis use and the subsequent occurrence of schizophrenia.
