Patativa do Assaré's work "Cante Lá que eu Canto Cá" (1978) is considered a classic of Brazilian popular literature. Through the lyrical voice, Patativa gives voice to the oppressed people of the Northeast. An important feature of the work is its defense of Northeastern identity, exposing a dichotomy between the knowledge of people living in urban areas and those living in the countryside. Despite the relevance of this work, studies comparing it to Brazilian Literary Schools are rare. This study is based on the principle that this relationship allows us to understand how this work is situated within the context of Brazilian literature and also allows us to understand the complexity of Patativa do Assaré's work, since it is a highly representative production of his oeuvre as a whole. This aspect forms the object of study of this article. The objective is to establish a comparison of the work "Cante lá que eu canto cá" with Brazilian Literary Schools, situating this production within the context of Brazilian literature. The investigation revealed evident relationships between the Literary Schools and the work under analysis, thus confirming the possibility of establishing this comparison and situating this work in relation to the Literary Schools in Brazil. An approximation is observed between the characteristics of the following Literary Schools: Romanticism, Symbolism, Parnassianism or Neoclassicism, and Arcadianism, in addition to a genuine characteristic consisting of the valorization of freedom of expression and thought, without excluding the importance that the author gives to rhyme and meter in poetry, even if not fixed. Furthermore, Patativa do Assaré values the rural Northeastern dialect, to the detriment of the formal standard of the language. The article presented here results from the use of Discourse Analysis (DA) methodology, adopted because it is a qualitative method very suitable for the analysis of language, not only in terms of meaning, but above all in relation to implicit social ideologies.
