Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder (CD) represent important neurodevelopmental conditions associated with significant functional impairments and a high risk of developing psychopathology in adulthood. This study aims to analyze the main determinants of the chronicity of these disorders, with an emphasis on neurobiological, environmental, and psychosocial aspects. This is a narrative literature review based on articles published in PubMed, SciELO, and LILACS databases in the last 15 years. It was found that chronicity is associated with alterations in neural circuits related to inhibitory control and emotional regulation, exposure to adverse environments in childhood, inconsistent parenting practices, and psychiatric comorbidities, especially ADHD. Early identification of these factors is essential for effective interventions capable of modifying the evolutionary course of these conditions.
