AGRICULTURAL BIOTECHNOLOGY AS A TOOL FOR FOOD SECURITY AND GLOBAL SUSTAINABILITY

Agricultural biotechnology has become an important tool to address global challenges related to food security and environmental sustainability. This chapter aims to analyze the role of biotechnological innovations in increasing agricultural productivity, reducing environmental impacts, and strengthening food security worldwide. The methodology consisted of a narrative review of scientific literature based on studies by recognized authors in the fields of biotechnology and sustainable agriculture, published in international academic databases. The results indicate that technologies such as genetic engineering, genetically modified crops, gene editing, and the use of beneficial microorganisms contribute to the development of crop varieties that are more resistant to pests, diseases, and adverse climatic conditions. In addition, these approaches promote more efficient use of natural resources and may reduce the dependence on chemical inputs in agricultural production. Evidence also suggests that biotechnology can enhance productivity and resilience in different agricultural systems. It is concluded that agricultural biotechnology plays a strategic role in the development of more resilient, productive, and sustainable food systems, helping to meet the growing global demand for food while preserving environmental resources.
