THE ROLE OF SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY IN GERONTOLOGY

The increase in the elderly population in Brazil highlights the need for training healthcare professionals to meet the specific demands of people over 60 years of age. In this context, this article aimed, through a bibliographic and documentary review, to examine the interaction between speech-language pathologists and the elderly, as well as the actions that this professional should perform according to the guidelines established by the National Health Policy for the Elderly (PNSPI). The results highlight that speech-language pathologists can actively participate in public policies focused on the health of the elderly, especially within the PNSPI. This is supported by the norms established by the Federal Council of Speech-Language Pathology, which offer support for this professional to develop initiatives aimed at the care and promotion of the health of the elderly.
