Abstract

This study aimed to highlight the intrinsic connection between oral health and quality of life in patients with chronic diseases, emphasizing the need for an integrated and multidisciplinary approach to health promotion and prevention of complications, with a view to improving the overall well-being of these individuals. The methodology consisted of a narrative literature review, using a qualitative approach, conducted in the PubMed/MEDLINE, SciELO, LILACS, and Google Scholar databases. Studies published between 2000 and 2024, in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, that addressed the relationship between oral health, chronic diseases, and quality of life were included. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the selected studies were analyzed descriptively and organized into thematic categories. The results showed that patients with chronic diseases have a higher prevalence of oral diseases, such as periodontal disease, dental caries, xerostomia, and tooth loss, which negatively impact functional, emotional, and social aspects of quality of life. A bidirectional relationship between systemic conditions and oral health was also observed, mediated by inflammatory and behavioral processes. It is concluded that oral health plays a fundamental role in the quality of life of patients with chronic diseases, and its inclusion in comprehensive care strategies is indispensable, with an interdisciplinary approach and a focus on health promotion and equity of access.
