THE ROLE OF NURSING IN FAMILY PLANNING: PROMOTING HEALTH AND PREVENTING REPRODUCTIVE RISKS

Family planning is a fundamental strategy for health promotion and prevention of reproductive risks, supported by Brazilian Law 9.263/1996 and primarily implemented within Primary Health Care. Nursing plays an essential role in this context through educational actions, humanized care, counseling, prescription of contraceptive methods according to official protocols, and continuous follow-up. This article aims to analyze the role of nursing in family planning, highlighting its contributions to reproductive autonomy, prevention of unplanned pregnancies, and promotion of sexual health. This narrative literature review included articles published between 2020 and 2025 in SciELO, BVS, LILACS, and Google Scholar databases. Results indicate that nurses act as educators and facilitators of access to contraceptive methods, significantly contributing to reducing maternal and infant risks and strengthening sexual and reproductive rights. It is concluded that nursing is essential for the effectiveness of family planning, despite ongoing challenges such as limited resources, cultural barriers, and the need for continuous training.
