Producer education and training are fundamental strategies for broadening the application of animal genetic improvement in production systems. This is a didactic literature review that brings together concepts and practical examples aimed at training producers. Knowledge of the fundamentals of animal breeding makes it possible to understand the principles of selection and the appropriate use of genetic information. In this process, keeping livestock records and ensuring data quality play an essential role, as they provide reliable information for genetic evaluations and for decision-making. Furthermore, training favors the interpretation of genetic evaluation results and their application in the choice of animals, matings and selection strategies. Thus, educational and training actions can bring technical knowledge closer to the reality of producers, contributing to a more efficient use of animal breeding tools within herds.
